Raju Kanumuri: The electronic items which included products such as mobile phones, microwave ovens, electricity meters, video recording devices, and digital cameras, lamps and lighting fixtures which are imported into India attract a customs duty or tariff. The tariff had been charged at the ten percent basic customs duty in addition to the integrated Goods and Services Tax as per the rates implied by the Government of India. However, as of December 2017, the Basic Indian airport customs rules for electronic items have been increased by the Government of India, in order to boost the local manufacturing of such products in India which would further impact the creation of jobs within the country.
Currently, an addition of five percentage point over the existing ten percent Basic Indian airport customs is charged on products such as digital cameras, mobile phones, electricity meters, and video recording devices. An additional ten percentage points above the existing ten percent Basic Customs Duty is charged on products such as lamps, microwave ovens, and lighting fixtures.
