A nativity certificate is an important document for persons of Indian Origin (PIO). Often while you are applying for your OCI card, how to get nativity certificate is the pressing question on your mind. In fact, many persons of Indian origin face a lot of difficulty because they have to produce this proof of Indian origin. If you are unsure about how to get nativity certificate and what is nativity certificate, then you have definitely come to the right place.
In case your parents or grandparents have left India before 26th January, 1950, then many of the applicants find it even more difficult to obtain the necessary documents like nativity certificate before applying for their OCI card. And so, to help you make the entire process a little easier, we have curated all the necessary information like the process of getting nativity certificate, what is nativity certificate, what can serve as your proof of Indian origin etc.
Before going any further, we need to be clear about what exactly a nativity certificate is. The first thing you will need to know is that Nativity Certificates are issued by the state governments, and not the central government of India. So, depending on the state that your parents or grandparents were from, you will have to get the process completed from that state. A nativity certificate is nothing but a document issued by the state governments, that certifies the applicant’s state of origin or whose relatives (that is, parents and/or grandparents) hail from that particular state.
Getting your nativity is not that difficult a task, provided you know the procedure and the pre-requisites in order to be eligible for a nativity certificate from your state. You will need to fill out the application form in your state in order to obtain a nativity certificate. Once you have filled out the application form, you will need to submit the form, either online or in person at the Government office. Depending on your state of origin, you will also have to meet certain eligibility criteria. For example, in the state of Tamil Nadu, you can download the form from the Tamil Nadu government’s website, and file the application in person. In order to be eligible for a nativity certificate, you should have a permanent address in Tamil Nadu. You or your relations should have lived in Tamil Nadu for a period of ten years or more. If you are married to someone who is eligible for a nativity certificate, then you will also be eligible for a nativity certificate from Tamil Nadu. The exact rules and criteria would differ slightly from state to state. So make sure that you contact the state authorities well in advance to avoid last-minute hiccups.
Documents to be attached to get a Nativity Certificate
Here too, the requirements would be slightly different, depending on the state. To get a clear idea, you will have to contact your local authorities.
You must make sure that you obtain your nativity certificate only through legitimate channels, otherwise, it would be a disadvantage when you apply for your OCI card. In certain towns, the tehsildars are allowed to issue nativity certificates. But when you are applying for your OCI card, ensure that it is issued by an authority no less than the District Magistrate or the District Collector. A nativity certificate issued by a lesser authority may not hold validity for your case.
In Goa, Baptism Certificates issued by the church and attested by the District Magistrate could be used in lieu of a Birth Certificate. However, this is valid only in Goa, and not other states.
There is a mandate that you will have to get your nativity certificate attested by the Ministry of External Affairs for it to be valid when you apply for your OCI card. The Ministry of External Affairs does not accept these documents at their office, but have outsourced them to several private companies. The list below are the companies currently working for the Ministry of External Affairs.
Your certificate is generally valid for one year after the date of issue. It usually takes between 15-20 days to get your nativity certificate after you have applied. However, this will differ from state to state.
We hope we have cleared up for you what is a nativity certificate, the process of getting a nativity certificate, so that you can provide proof of Indian origin while applying for your OCI card with ease.
