What is a Nativity Certificate?

Before going any further, we need to be clear about what exactly a nativity certificate is. The first thing you will need to know is that Nativity Certificates are issued by the state governments, and not the central government of India. So, depending on the state that your parents or grandparents were from, you will have to get the process completed from that state. A nativity certificate is nothing but a document issued by the state governments, that certifies the applicant’s state of origin or whose relatives (that is, parents and/or grandparents) hail from that particular state.

Steps to Get Your Nativity Certificate

Getting your nativity is not that difficult a task, provided you know the procedure and the pre-requisites in order to be eligible for a nativity certificate from your state. You will need to fill out the application form in your state in order to obtain a nativity certificate. Once you have filled out the application form, you will need to submit the form, either online or in person at the Government office. Depending on your state of origin, you will also have to meet certain eligibility criteria. For example, in the state of Tamil Nadu, you can download the form from the Tamil Nadu government’s website, and file the application in person. In order to be eligible for a nativity certificate, you should have a permanent address in Tamil Nadu. You or your relations should have lived in Tamil Nadu for a period of ten years or more. If you are married to someone who is eligible for a nativity certificate, then you will also be eligible for a nativity certificate from Tamil Nadu. The exact rules and criteria would differ slightly from state to state. So make sure that you contact the state authorities well in advance to avoid last-minute hiccups.

Types of Nativity Certificate Acceptable for OCI Card

You must make sure that you obtain your nativity certificate only through legitimate channels, otherwise, it would be a disadvantage when you apply for your OCI card. In certain towns, the tehsildars are allowed to issue nativity certificates. But when you are applying for your OCI card, ensure that it is issued by an authority no less than the District Magistrate or the District Collector.
