In addition, you should also have a valid Indian passport at the time of application. Without these two documents, you will not be eligible to apply for an International Drivers License. Once you have these two documents, here is the procedure you will need to follow:

  • You should go to your nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the area of your residence for this application. Alternatively, you could also approach an authorized automobile association, who will help you through the process.
  • You will be asked to fill out your application in form known as ‘Form 4A’. You should get this form from your RTO itself, as the form may slightly differ depending on your state.
  • You will be asked to submit copies of all relevant documents, which are given in the checklist below.
  • You should pay the requisite fees. This used to cost around INR 500, but since January 2017, the cost has gone up to INR 1,000.
  • Once this is done, it usually takes an average of 30 days for your International Drivers License to be processed.
